Knitted Bender Balaclava

knit bender mask.jpg

Tracy Widdess knitted this Bender balaclava along with other quirky masks inspired by horror and science fiction.

It just makes sense to commit crimes in this.

almost daily photo: Mar. 31st

Whenever I bake I end up making last minute trips to the grocery store for one ingredient or the other. This time my dough for the Jar of Stars [1] needed to rest over night and in order to get it made I needed to make a late night trip. While there this packaging for something else entirely caught my (tired) eye.

daily photo thing update: Today I'm finally posting a backlog of photos all at once and renaming them "almost daily photo" because I'm no good at keeping up with stuff and, as it turns out, I'm really not good at keeping up with stuff when I've put a set of artificial rules on myself. So I'll try to post a photo a day but if I'm busy or got nothing I won't. I mean, I don't want to start resenting my own self, right?

How-To: "You Have Just Been Poisoned" Pint Glass

finsihed-outside-glass-bottom-closeup-600x450.jpg

Sean at MAKE has an awesome new project over on Make: Projects.

Fans of Patrick McGoohan's classic BBC spy series The Prisoner will recognize this gimmick from Episode 15, "The Girl Who Was Death." It's a pint glass with words etched on the bottom (in authentic "Village" font) that appear line-by-line as the liquid is imbibed. My version is the closest reproduction of the original I could achieve.

Pen Nib Dress

animated pen dress.jpg

I don't know much about dresses...or pen nibs, but apparently together they create an impressive visual effect, as this Pen Nib Dress by John Nussey and Steven Tai illustrates.

795 pen nibs, mounted on tiny motors, are sewn into the dress. These rows of pen nibs are animated to created a hypnotic shimmer of movement which changes over time, varying the tempo, pattern and the overall mood of the piece.

May Birthday Giveaway: Made By Moxie

Today I have a wee finger puppet made by the amazing Moxie [1] for one lucky person. Moxie is a fiber artist and needle felting wool by hand is her usual (but not only) medium. She creates breathtakingly amazing sculptures, both large and small, some are lifelike and some hilarious while at the same time a bit heartbreaking. You can see some of her most recent work on her site: icons & totems & pieces of the past [2], a recent show in NYC, and her sets Hungry [3] and Hungry 2 [4] are hilarious. If you're interested in learning to needle felt keep an eye on her schedule, she teaches classes.

If you'd like win this sweet bit of the genius please leave a comment with this post. If you don't mind I'd love to know: Have you ever tried needle felting? I have, but I'm afraid it'll take a lot more practice for it to become something that could be called presentable. You've got until 10 a.m. PST Friday, May 6th to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks for entering!

This is the mural I stare at while I'm waiting for the Light Rail to arrive. For some reason the thing I focus on first is always Alice juxtaposed with the rice cooker. Something about the rushed worry next to a quiet kitchen appliance makes me giggle. My camera does that face detection thing and I'm happy to tell you it only recognized Dr. Frankenfurter Elizabeth Taylor there as a human.

May Birthday Giveaway: lovely tea towels from mirror mirror

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got a set of colorful Atelier LZC Tea Towels [1] from the mirror mirror [2] shop, which currently spans both the UK and the US. I known Paola [3] because I read that she moved with her family from London to my old neighborhood here in Seattle so I sent her a very long email describing where I thought the best food shops and parks were. Happily she didn't think I was a crazy person and I've had an excuse to visit my old home, including this one bakery that makes good soups, ever since. I absolutely love the way she has curated what is offered in her shop, and I continue to have a crush on the stacking egg cups [4] which are, if you'll allow me, the most practical of all egg cups I've seen.

f you'd like these two lovely French-designed tea towels to grace your kitchen please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to chat about (I love reading all the comments) answer this question: Have you ever been to a high tea? I have, twice, and I have to say I found the little sandwiches confounding each time. Your turn, you've got until Saturday, May 28th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Good luck! Bakesale for Japan tomorrow

[1]

It's 11 p.m. and I'm just finishing my baked goods for the Bakesale for Japan tomorrow. I'm fond of what I made and might have to buy one for myself since I didn't have any left over. I made Jars of Stars, lots of little star shaped cookies. (Pictures later.) It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but I think it was worth it. Here in Seattle it will be at the Cakespy shop (more details [2]). See the Bakesale for Japan [3] page to find if there is one being held near you.

I've got a few days worth of photos to put up but I'm tired and need to pack for a few days of travel, so I'll be back on Monday and catch up then. Hope your weekend is wonderful.

A Harry Potter-Themed Birthday Party

hp_sorting.jpg

Elena Nazarro has some tips for putting together a Harry Potter-themed birthday party. I bet kids would really dig this.

It seems like Harry Potter is the perfect theme for a child's birthday party too, because many of the stories involve groups of children doing activities together, so it's not much of a leap. Suggestions include having a sorting ceremony, chosing wands, and even having a Transfiguration class. (Put Shrinky Dinks in the toaster oven and yell, "Reducto!" while they're cooking.)

How-To: Make a Storage Garland for Softies

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

softie_garland_organizer_step14a.jpg

By Jessica Wilson

A long time ago in a literary galaxy far, far away, I was a children's bookseller extraordinaire. I ran an enormous department with very little display space for non-book items and found myself invaded with a plethora of plush toys and bath books. Our solution was a dozen or so clunky-chunky plastic chain links with heavy-duty plastic clothespins attached that anchored the plethora of plush toys and bath books in their spring-happy jaws. We hung the chains vertically to create as much display space as possible and in as pleasing a way possible, and I thought, "Man, if only these were quirkier... or you know, cute."

So here you go, a decade or so later - my take on a nifty garland for storing and displaying your kiddos' plush collection. The cool part is that you can color coordinate it to your liking, and your kiddos can help as well!

Nicola Freeman's Giant Sweeties Sculptures

P6102387.jpg

By Andrew Lewis

When I decided to visit a local art exhibition, I didn't expect to find such an engaging treat waiting for me when I got there. Artist Nicola Freeman came up with these enchanting, fun sculptures as a part of the degree show at the University of Wolverhampton.

The four pieces on show (Love Hearts, Sweetie Watch, Sweetie Necklace, and Lolly Pop) made the heat and the noise of the exhibition worthwhile for me. I'm a fanatical consumer of Love Hearts, and seeing a giant statue of my candy store peccadillo really made my day. The giant sweeties were a hit with the rest of the visiting public, too. Everyone seemed to have a smile on their face as they were walking around the oversized confectionery.

I couldn't help wondering how the pieces were made, and the realism of the work made me hope that they were actually edible. Sadly, this wasn't the case, but the heavyweight giant sweets are much more than just eye-candy. I was lucky enough to spend some time talking to Nicola about her work, and the processes that she used to create such a successful piece.

Exploring Vintage Album Cover Art With Project Thirty-Three

project_thirty_three_1.jpg

p33_harmonicarascals.jpg

Project Thirty-Three is new to me, but I've already spent way too much time browsing the archives for color and design inspiration.

The seemingly infinite number of vintage record jackets that convey their message with only simple shapes and typography never cease to amaze me. Project Thirty-Three is my personal collection and shrine to circles and dots, squares and rectangles, and triangles, and the brilliant designers that made them come to life on album covers.

This is my favorite inexpensive tea. It's hard to find in your (or at least my) average grocery store and I live in fear that it will be discontinued. The last time I found it in a grocery store on sale I bought a dozen boxes and the person ringing me up must have thought I was nuts. Then again, it is high time I embrace my role as The Crazy Lady. Does that mean I can start wearing sequins at unexpected times of day? Right on.

May Birthday Giveaway: good stuff from Rakka Deer

Today I'm happy to have a bunch of goods from local artist Rakka Deer [1], aka Kris. She's got style and wit, and she's got a huge number of projects going on at any given time. It amazes me. Besides Rakka Deer [2] and her Etsy shop [3] she has 37 Confections [4], Stupid Fucking Awesome [5], Excheckered [6], Pax and Ak [7], Skull Diggery [8], Suspect and Fugitive [9], a Tumblr [10] and Glitter Pissing [11]. She's offering up some good stuff from her shop: a six pack of geek cards [12], a thread painting [13] and a six pack of Inigo Montoya [14] cards featuring a drawing she did of the character over a pile of Hello My Name Is stickers (this still makes me laugh).

And while I'm talking about Rakka Deer please allow me to mention this: Recently the town she grew up in was devastated by the tornadoes and flooding along the Mississippi so she's raising money by holding a Bake Sale for the South [15], which is happening at the Cakespy Shop [16] here in Seattle on Saturday, May 14th at 11 a.m. I'll be baking for it (something in jars, but of course). Also on Saturday is the Great American Bake Sale
for ?Share Our Strength? at the uptown Metropolitan Market starting at 9:30 a.m. Two bake sales! Seattle is in luck.

To win the package of items from Rakka Deer please leave a comment with this website. You've got until Saturday, May 14th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [17] applies. If you'd like something to chat about answer this question: What is your favorite thing to make for, or buy at, bake sales? Clearly I enjoy making stuff in jars. Alright, good luck!

How-To: Cable Braided Necklace and Bracelet

cable_necklace.jpg

What a simple and pretty design! Olgajazzy shares a detailed tutorial to knit up this cable necklace. You don't even need to know how to follow a cable pattern - the design is ingeniously constructed from two flat strips.

It closes with a button, so you can also wrap it around your wrist a couple times as a bracelet.

I've been baking more sizes and shapes of rainbow cakes [1] to see if I can recreate the nice rainbow arch in different pans. So far the answer is a very big no. Perhaps picking the right shape of cake pan on my first try was the luck of the Irish? I'll update the original how-to with my findings.

Above is my attempt at Tiffany blue frosting which turned out far too pastel.

Wave at the Bus Costume Creations

buswave1.jpg

My dad takes great pride when he can embarrass me or have the last laugh. I bet he's kicking himself for not thinking of Wave at the Bus, one dad's year-long prank on his teenage son en route to school. You might have heard about this fun blog, but if you haven't, make sure to check it out and see all the great costumes that were pulled together from the family's own costume box and friends and neighbors. I wonder if his son's got something up his sleeve for Father's Day!

How-To: Expedit Fabric Cutting/Storage Table

expedit_fabric_table.jpg

I recently moved in to a new house that has an amazing studio space. I'm thrilled beyond belief to have such a spacious room in which to spread out and work, but I've encountered one problem: I don't have a large fabric cutting table on which to spread out! I've ended up with a massive room that has almost nothing in it. I've been looking for different options for creating a large cutting surface with good storage and organization underneath that won't completely break the bank. I think this IKEA hack from Jamie at Prudent Baby might be just the ticket. See how she turned a massive Expedit bookcase into a high-functioning cutting table and fabric organization and storage center.

How-To: Build a Framed Spool Organizer

spool_frame1.jpg spool_frame2.jpg

Here's a functional way to organize your sewing thread, and have it double as an art piece. Grey Luster Girl collaborated with her husband to build this rack from simple materials. I love how they created the frame from a strip of trim!
